Freezing rain warnings for northern B.C. after weekend of heavy snow

Environment Canada has issued multiple freezing rain and snowfall warnings for northern British Columbia following heavy snow over the weekend. As of Monday morning, freezing rain warnings were in effect for several regions, including north and south Peace River, Bulkley Valley, Fort Nelson, Lakes District, and Stuart-Nechako.

The agency warned that freezing rain would continue into the afternoon, making highways, roads, walkways, and parking lots potentially icy and slippery. There is also a risk of ice build-up, which could cause utility outages and break tree branches.

A snowfall warning has been issued for the Cassiar Mountains, Teslin, and Watson Lake areas, with up to 35 centimeters of snow expected by Monday night. These regions have already seen up to 50 centimeters of snow in some areas, including Terrace.

Additionally, a winter storm warning is in place for inland areas of the North Coast, where up to 40 centimeters of snow is anticipated on Monday. This will gradually transition into a mix of snow and rain, with the possibility of freezing rain during the changeover. Heavy rain is expected later in the day, which could lead to flooding in low-lying areas, slushy conditions, and travel disruptions. Coastal regions may receive up to 150 millimeters of rain by Wednesday morning, accompanied by strong southeast winds gusting up to 100 km/h in exposed areas.
