Here's why part of Montreal's Village is closed: skating rink coming

In the coming weeks, Montreal's Village neighborhood will see fewer vehicles and more pedestrians as the city closes a major section of road to develop a new winter attraction.

Sainte-Catherine Street East will be closed between Atateken and Wolfe streets until early March for the Ville-Marie borough to set up an ice rink, marking a step in the renovation of Village Square.

Starting January 18, alongside the 100-meter rink, the area will feature a multifunctional stage for performances, vibrant lighting, and an elevated walkway for better access.

From January 25 to March 1, short film screenings will take place every Saturday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

On Sundays, the rink will host "Disco Sundays" from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

The square, which replaced the Blanc Gallery in October, also includes a concession stand and bar.

This development is part of the Village's Collective Intervention Strategy aimed at revitalizing the area.
