Quebec electric vehicle subsidies to be suspended in 2025
The subsidy program for those purchasing an electric vehicle in Quebec will be suspended next year.
Quebec’s subsidy program for electric vehicle (EV) purchases will be temporarily suspended next year, with significant reductions in financial assistance planned for the coming years.
The Environment Ministry announced on Monday that the "Go Green" (Roulez vert) subsidy program will pause on February 1, 2025, due to high demand in recent months. Those wishing to take advantage of the subsidies will need to act in January.
“The program will be temporarily suspended as of February 1,” the ministry stated, adding that it will resume on April 1 after the next provincial budget.
Changes to Subsidies
Quebec, which leads North America with over 30% market share for electric vehicles in the third quarter of 2024, plans to reduce subsidies for EVs starting in 2025.
Subsidies for fully electric vehicles will drop from $7,000 in 2024 to $4,000 in 2025, then to $2,000 in 2026. By 2027, the program is set to end, offering no financial assistance for EV purchases.
“The financial assistance offered under the Roulez vert program was designed to provide the necessary impetus to the emerging electric vehicle market and support its transformation,” the ministry explained.
Quebec estimates there are about 335,000 electric vehicles on its roads, representing 33% of EVs in Canada.
Gradual Reductions in Subsidies
The following reductions are planned for various types of vehicles:
- Hybrid vehicle (8 to 15 kWh): $2,500 (2024); $1,000 (2025); $500 (2026)
- Hybrid vehicle (more than 15 kWh): $5,000 (2024); $2,000 (2025); $1,000 (2026)
- Used fully electric vehicle: $3,500 (2024); $2,000 (2025); $1,000 (2026)
- Electric motorcycle: $2,000 (2024); $1,000 (2025); $500 (2026)
- Electric limited-speed motorcycle: $500 (2024); no subsidies beyond 2024
