Quebec launching investigations into 3 Montreal schools over religion
Bienville is in Saint-Michel, while the other two are in Côte-des-Neiges.
The Quebec Education Ministry has announced formal investigations into three Montreal schools following allegations of potential religious abuses. Preliminary findings suggest a toxic environment and behaviors raising concerns for students' safety and well-being.
Education Minister Bernard Drainville confirmed on Wednesday that comprehensive investigations will commence immediately at Bienville Elementary School in Saint-Michel, Saint-Pascal-Baylon Elementary School, and La Voie High School, both located in Côte-des-Neiges.
These actions follow audits requested by Drainville in October, prompted by a previous report concerning Bedford School in Montreal, which highlighted issues related to religious practices and a harmful climate within the institution.
"The nature of the allegations being of concern" has led to the decision for in-depth investigations into these schools, according to the minister's office. The ministry cited “multiple issues” necessitating further scrutiny, including a toxic atmosphere, interference in decision-making processes, doubts about the quality of educational services, and behaviors raising fears for students' physical or psychological safety.
This investigation is part of a broader effort to address systemic concerns within the province's schools.
