Quebec police arrest 46 for drunk driving in single day, 150 tickets for no winter tires
“All our partners will continue to intervene throughout the holiday season,” the SQ said in a news release.
Quebec provincial police (Sûreté du Québec, or SQ) conducted a large-scale operation on December 12 to address impaired driving and ensure vehicles were equipped with proper winter tires.
During the one-day operation, officers carried out over 300 roadside checks, resulting in 46 arrests for impaired driving. Additionally, more than 150 tickets were issued to drivers whose vehicles lacked compliant winter tires.
“All our partners will continue their efforts throughout the holiday season,” the SQ stated in a press release.
Context and Related Efforts
Earlier in December, Montreal police conducted a similar two-day operation, issuing 292 tickets for non-compliant tires and 368 fines for other traffic infractions.
The SQ emphasized the serious consequences of impaired driving, highlighting its role as a major contributor to road fatalities.
“Between 2018 and 2022, alcohol was a factor in 25 percent of fatal collisions and 15 percent of serious injury collisions, on average,” the SQ noted. They cautioned against relying on personal estimates of alcohol levels before driving.
“The effects of even a single drink should not be underestimated. When you drink or take drugs, you shouldn’t drive,” the statement concluded.
