Smog warning in effect in Montreal, Laval

Residents of Montreal and nearby areas are being advised to exercise caution outdoors as a smog warning is currently in effect, following a night of festive celebrations.

Environment and Climate Change Canada issued the alert for Montreal, Laval, Vaudreuil, Valleyfield-Beauharnois, and Mont-Tremblant–Sainte-Agathe.

“High concentrations of pollutants are expected this morning, which will result in poor air quality, especially in metropolitan areas where pollutant emissions are more significant,” the agency stated.

The advisory highlights that children with asthma and individuals with respiratory or heart conditions should take extra care and avoid strenuous outdoor activities during the warning period.

According to Environment Canada, wood heating is the primary source of fine particles contributing to smog during Quebec winters. Residents are encouraged to consult local regulations concerning solid fuel-burning appliances.

In Montreal, using wood-burning stoves or similar devices is prohibited unless they emit fewer than 2.5 grams of particles per hour. Additionally, during smog warnings, even certified solid fuel-burning appliances are not allowed, and violations can result in fines.
